How to Chalk Paint Furniture Step by Step

Chalk paint can transform an inherited piece quickly, or transform an old flea market find, giving them a whole new look in no time. Simply follow these guidelines for prep, painting, and sealing so your furniture stays beautiful for years.

Chalk paint can be applied directly onto many surfaces without needing to sand it first, however, it is still essential that furniture be thoroughly cleaned prior to painting, with any necessary repairs performed prior to commencing painting.

Prep the Surface

Before beginning your project, ensure the surface is clean and free from dust. In addition, working in an area with sufficient ventilation will speed drying times while limiting dust deposits on wet paint layers.

If the object you’re painting has deep scratches, gouges or other forms of damage, it must first be repaired before starting painting. Fill any holes with wood filler and smooth any rough areas until they’re smooth before beginning your artwork.

Some people enjoy distressing their chalk painted furniture to achieve a stylishly weathered appearance. To do this, use medium-grain sandpaper to gently remove some of the paint around areas that would naturally wear over time such as handles or knobs, corners and edges – although this step is completely optional.

Mix the Paint

Chalk paint differs from other furniture paints in that there’s often no need for prepping or sanding before painting with it, as its bond to surfaces bonds nicely and smooths over any blemishes or unevenness in their surface. That being said, in certain instances some preparation may be required – for instance if your piece has any holes or chips you should fill before beginning with chalk painting.

Make sure the can of chalk paint is completely mixed before starting painting. A paint stirrer or flipping it upside-down should suffice in getting all the ingredients mixed up evenly.

At your work area, it is a good idea to put down cardboard or a drop cloth as protection from spills or smudges. Additionally, opening windows and using fans to promote proper airflow is helpful in maintaining an optimal working environment.

Apply the Paint

One of the great benefits of chalk paint is that it does not typically require priming or sanding prior to application. However, for surfaces that have damage or unevenness that need fixing, using wood filler might be beneficial in doing this first. You could also sand any rough areas or splintery bits to smooth them over.

Once your furniture has been thoroughly cleaned and repaired, painting it using either a brush or roller is the next step. Thin coats work best as this allows the natural color of wood to show through.

Make sure to use a high quality brush, and allow sufficient time for each coat of paint to dry thoroughly between applications. When the piece has set completely, add wax. This will protect it against moisture damage as well as scuffing – wait two weeks for hardening!

Let It Dry

Before placing the furniture piece back into storage, allow for at least 24 hours for its paint to fully dry and cure before placing back in storage – this will help avoid accidental scratching or abrasions from happening unexpectedly.

If the furniture piece will be used for food and drink (such as a table), wax sealant must be used to protect it from moisture damage and ensure its long-term beauty. Doing this will keep the chalk paint looking amazing for years.

Selecting high-quality wax is of utmost importance, as the top brands will have exceptional durability and provide a glossy finish. When applying it lightly or more thickly for distressed looks or smoother textures you can also sanding back any rough patches afterwards.

Seal It

Chalk paint’s matte surface and minimal prep requirements make it an excellent way to transform old furniture and achieve a shabby-chic aesthetic. No priming or prepping are needed and it can even be painted over varnished wood surfaces!

Chalk paint furniture requires sealing with wax to protect it from damage and stains; once you know how to seal it properly, its beauty will last for many years!

Before painting any piece of furniture, make sure it is dust and debris-free using a lint-free cloth to allow the clear coat to adhere better to its painted surface. Once dry, allow it to air-dry in a well-ventilated area away from any outdoor particles that could land on it while wet.
